WebOS Tales : War Againts iOS and Android

"webOS has the potential to become a very broad and very massive platform,"
I agree. The interface is cool. User friendly up to iOS 4. Well polish. And look young. Let see some shot of it. WebOS 2.0 that is. Because i don't know why, it deliver me some hype.  Here it is its home screen.

At the bottom, we have 5 lovable icon of launchers. To the far left is phone. Tap it then numeric keypad greet you. To the far right is menu.  Tap it to launch the menu. As soon as the menu is display, these lovable icons are hidden. About the three in the middle, well it is customizable.

And here is how the menu look like. OK you can swipe it to left and right to reveal more of the menu in what they call pages. And the title like this above can be edited. For example, this one show extra. You can rename it to what ever you like. If you wish to add more, no problem.

And what more. The multitasking interface is pretty eye candy. You can throw it back at the background an the page stack on top of each other.  They call it card. It's very neat and lovely. When you swipe you finger to the right, more cards reveal. Well, that happen if you do stack more than three applications.

Another cool thing is to have a universal search. It just not help you with searching thing up the net or inside the system. But it provide you with option to either send anything that you type in the search bar, let it be email, sms, make a memo, even update your social network and app catalog. that is convenient enough compare to when you need to launch particular apps to do it.

Of course that have fancy name to this universal search. They call it Just Type. Well nothing more can describe it this well. Just Type. If you want to email, Just Type. If you want to search on the net, Just Type. But don't hope to shut down your phone by Just Type "Shutdown". That's silly.

Here how Facebook look like in WebOS 2.0. It blend well. It does support facebook chat. The interface it nicely polish. And there is card to see the update of your chat, email, any feed and even tweeter.

Plus the browser support flash. Yeah you can play the video in the browser. You can play it in fullscreen. And pinch out to stick it back in the browser. Even you put the browser at background, stack it at card, you still can see the play button on the video. The card look awesome.

Wonder what happen if you lost. And need a map. So this OS also got something to help you get back on tracks. Although not as advance as other navigation series. But it can help you to get whereabouts. webOS on Palm use Google Maps.

Ok folks that's about it. So from the look and usability, the webOS do have arsenal to go on wars with iOS and Androids. Furthermore, since Palm are now under HP, it easy for this OS to get inside many hand-held devices and tablet.

The battlecry had been shouted loud and full of fire. Here what their warchief have to say,

"There is no doubt webOS is a direct Android competitor (Apple as well). With it, HP wants to stake out its own ecosystem and rival the complete environments created by the others (think WebOS App Store, iTunes equivalent)," industry analyst Jack Gold said.

But the main problem is there are still no capable device with the ability to fully  integrated with  webOS or attract consumer with its hardware strength. Still webOS  are no where to be seen under fully touch screen hood.  Leaving both Apple and Android being dominant. Even RIM BB find it hard to shine. So webOS need to cement its soul under that inventive and innovative device or else it just become another player who just sign up to compete without intention to win. There's light somehow, where by the end of this years 2011, some integration of webOS into windows PC and laptop. This is something to look foward.
